Tile Roof Attachments

Postby jpruett » Tue Oct 25, 2011 8:41 am

I am looking for some feedback on preferred methods of attachment for tile roofs (specifically barrel or Spanish style). My city requires double flashing for the standard post style mounts. This seems reasonable since we get a whopping 3" of rain per year! Anyway, this is much more labor intensive than the hook style, like the Creo Tecc ones. What are the pros and cons to each of these methods? Cost wise I think the hooks are a little cheaper compared to the double flashed posts. Thanks in advance for sharing any experiences with this topic.

For barrel tile aka spanish tile, the flashing would be one approach. There are also some methods using a small hole in the tile with a hanger bolt type attachment. I think the best though are tile hooks, like the Creotec. We also sell some that are significantly less costly -

That shows a style for flat tiles, but they do them for barrel tile too for a similar price.

Thanks Eric,

I went down and talked to the right person at the building division and brought a variety of spec sheets from different mount companies. It was a good discussion and surprisingly he was in favor of the more simple to install roof hooks. They view the tile over the hook as the second flashing. The requirement on the lower flashing is as follows: layer of mastic onto the felt, then the hook and lag screws, then netting, then another coat of mastic. So the finished product is a mound of mastic over the foot of the hook mount. I am good with it and still pretty quick install.

I looked at the hooks on the site and while I am like the savings I am concerned about versatility. For the flat tiles its a no brainer to use the less expensive hooks. For the Spanish tile the ability to move the position of the hook laterally a few inches in either direction is a plus with the Creo Tecc hooks. You mentioned "they do them for barrel tile too for a similar price", does this provide the lateral movement? Thanks again.

Sorry I didn't see your post.
[edit]
Adjustability so you can get the rails straight is nice.

Anyway, I ran across a creotec video, that shows how you shave a bit of a tile to clear the hook. I was wondering about that. This would apply to other hooks as well I think.

The racking system in that video looks OK but I think we still prefer horizontal rails and clamps, for various reasons, especially the ability to use grounding clips, and supporting the modules at the points recommended by most manufacturers.

Yeah I have seen that video. That is definately a different style racking system. I like this video a little better for seeing exactly how the hook is mounted.

He doesnt quite show how you can offset them but you can see how the rafter will not always end up in the trough of the tile so sometimes you will have to offset the hook a little. The creotecc has enough holes on the plate to accomodate this. I would like to see the ones you carry for the spanish tile they may have a wider plate with multiple holes to do the same thing. If you have a pic could you post it?

Actually, take a look at page 25.

Here's one picture - this could be used with any rail with a side attachment.

I think we could order one for a test.
