AC Solar Panels
The solar inverter industry has seen many new developments over the past years, for traditional large centralized string inverters we saw DC-DC optimizers, which helped lead to the innovative detached micro-inverters, which currently allow for a near AC module, and now we will see true AC solar panels hit the market in 2011.
An AC module will have an integrated micro-inverter without any exposed DC wiring. According to the NEC, an AC module is "A complete, environmentally protected unit consisting of solar cells, optics, inverter, and other components, designed to generate AC power when exposed to sunlight."
There are many advantages that will come with AC modules, including enhanced energy harvest, reduced installation costs by eliminating hundreds of feet of wires, combiner boxes, DC disconnects and other common BOS equipment. These new panels will integrate current micro-inverter technology from leading manufacturers; Enphase Energy, Exeltech, and Solarbridge Technologies are a few among them.
